Engine Valve Spring Fracture Hazard (FA20 Boxer Engine)
Component: Engine and Engine Cooling (~25,000 Scion FR-S units in the US)
Problem Summary
The valve springs within the 2.0L FA20 boxer engine may fracture over time under high-load stress due to micro-defects during spring manufacturing. Affects early production 2013 Scion FR-S vehicles manufactured between March 2012 and July 2013.
Safety Hazard
If an engine valve spring fractures, the engine may stall while driving and fail to restart, significantly increasing the risk of a high-speed crash or total catastrophic engine failure.
Official Remedy (Free Repair)
Toyota / Scion dealerships will replace the engine valve springs free of charge. Note: This requires dropping the engine for proper access.
Tip: One of the most famous Scion recalls. When having this performed, ensure the Toyota technician follows proper RTV gasket sealant application guidelines.
